"The dance class experience should be enjoyable and physically intense, but must be taught on multiple levels. The first and surficial level is in movement and learning new techniques or choreographies to round out the basic dance vocabulary. An intermediate level is to discover deeper philosophies about the dance and integrate multiple layers of technique in the student's performance. At the deepest level, the dance student discovers herself (himself) in a personal, unique style, which is actively encouraged and, with assistance as necessary, developed in class and on stage." --Maya Christina philosophy of teaching bellydance
In class and in seminars, Maya Christina employs a unique method of teaching: in addition to the usual technique drills and choreography by incorporated lectures, demonstrations, homework, and discussion; often, a chalkboards and hand-outs are used as teaching aides, and note-taking is strongly encouraged! All facets of teaching, whether classroom or seminar, include exploration of the deeper levels of dance, such as personal expression and musicality.
In addition to performance, Maya offers a variety of specialty classes, seminars, private classes, and individual and troupe choreographies. Scroll down the page to find the section that interests you!
Performance
Maya Christina's performances are suitable for the whole family! Maya is available for dance performances, theatre, and film. Contact Maya for more info.
Private classes
In private instruction, Maya specializes in helping the individual dancer create more depth in his or her performance through fine-tuning of expression, hand, arm, and body posture, musicality, and fitting technique to the individual's body shape and dance style. Classes primarily are offered for experienced performers, but occasionally intermediate and beginning students are accepted. Private lessons with Maya are on the per-hour basis and by approval only.
Choreography
Maya's choreographies are more than dance routines; they are also instruction in technique and musicality! Each choreography is unique; although music may have been used for another individual or troupe, Maya choreographs with the abilities and stylings of the individual or troupe in mind to create an artpiece tailored for the performer.
Choreographies are offered as full pieces or, if the student wishes a deeper, more interactive learning experience, as a co-choreography built by Maya and the student during the private choreography session.
